USS NAVARRO 2010 REUNION

                                             JACKSONVILLE, FL

            OCTOBER 4TH (MONDAY) – OCTOBER 7TH (THURSDAY)

WELCOME TO JACKSONVILLE:

Jacksonville is a city with a history that began in 1562.  The French founded a colony on the

banks of the St. John’s River.  Three years later Spanish troops moved in and controlled the area

for the next 200 years.  In 1763, Spain traded Florida to Britain for Havana.  In 1783, Britain

returned Florida to Spain.  Spain struck a deal with the United States in 1819 to trade Florida for

recognition of Spanish sovereignty over Texas.  After this time, settles poured into the territory

and founded Jacksonville, (named after General Andrew Jackson).

Today, Jacksonville is one of Florida’s major cultural, financial, industrial, transportation and

Commercial centers.  In 1996, the metropolitan area’s population passed the 1 million mark.

The City of Jacksonville has very strong military ties.  The Naval Station Mayport is located here.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

After considering several possible locations for our 2010 Reunion, we selected the CLARION

AIRPORT HOTEL CONFERENCE CENTER.  The Clarion Hotel is located at the Jacksonville

International Airport.

The hotel rate is $89 (plus tax) per night.  Included in this is a full hot breakfast buffet.  The rate

is, also, good for 3 days prior and 3 days after our reunion.  For reservations, call the hotel direct

at 1-800-234-2398 or 904-741-1997.  When making your reservations, ask for the “USS NAVARRO

REUNION”.  Early reservations are encouraged to assist in room selections (single, double, and

handicapped).  After September 4th, rooms will be on a space available basis.

The Clarion will provide a free airport shuttle.  Clarion telephone number is 741-1997.  The

Clarion, also, provides a free shuttle service within a 5 mile radius.  A large shopping center and

over a dozen restaurants are located within this radius.

The Clarion is easily reached by automobile from I-95 (exit 393) or I-295 (exit 33).  As you

approach the airport watch the overhead signs.  (Stay in the left lane.)  After the Florida Air

Guard exit, the Clarion will be the next exit (noted on the left side of the overhead sign).  See

back of Clarion Hotel brochure.

TRANSPORTATION:

Two major interstate highways, I-95 and I-10, intersect in Jacksonville.  Other major Federal and

State highways provide automobile access.  Rail service is provided by Amtrack, and air travel is

provided by over a dozen major and regional carriers.

WEATHER:

The average temperature in Jacksonville for early October (high/low) is 82/66.  Remember this

when packing for the trip.  Hurricanes are possible, but not likely due to the location on the

East coast.

TOURS: (Brief Description)  All tours are provided by Active Escapes.

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 – The day starts with a two hour tour of Jacksonville, the “River City”.

The tour will trace the history of the city from the first inhabitants to modern points of interest

including the Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Wall.  This wall lists the veterans of Duval

County that died in wartime service.  We will hold our Reunion Memorial Service here.

Lunch is included in the tour and will be at Jacksonville’s Premier Riverfront Restaurant that

overlooks the Jacksonville skyline and the St. John’s River.  In the afternoon, we will tour the

Anheuser-Busch Brewery.  The tour offers an excellent step-by-step look at the all natural

Budweiser brewing process.  Complimentary tastings will be served in the Hospitality Room.

Price for this tour is $59.00 per person.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010 – A professional tour guide dressed in period costume will cover

450 years of colorful St. Augustine History.  Stops include Fort Castillo de San Marco, which was

never captured in battle, and Flagler Memorial Church.

After this portion of the tour, the guide will lead us to the historic district and make some lunch

recommendations.  We are on our won for lunch and shopping in St. Augustine’s unique

historic district.

Price for this tour is $50 per person.

Thursday, October 7, 2010 – We will have a two hour tour of Naval Station Mayport.  Hopefully

a ship will be available for touring.  Naval Station Mayport is supporting the present wars.
